Athlete Travel Tips - Reduce Your Risk of Colds After A Flight

Flying often brings with it the risk of catching viruses, which can disrupt your plans, especially if you're traveling for work or to participate in a race. Implementing a preventive protocol can help you avoid illnesses like colds, which could otherwise interfere with your training schedule. The dry air in airplanes can dehydrate your eyes, skin, and nasal passages, making you more vulnerable to viruses. Here are some travel protocols that have been effective for me in maintaining my health during flights:

1. Aquaphor Ointment - Apply this inside your nostrils. On longer flights, reapply as needed. Keeping your mucous membranes moist is crucial, particularly if you're seated near someone who is coughing or sneezing.

2. ZICAM Nasal Spray or Saline Spray - Use this at the start of your flight. ZICAM contains zinc, which can help fight viruses. If you prefer not to use medications, a saline spray is a good alternative.

3. Eye Drops - Long flights can lead to dehydration, affecting your eyes. Use eye drops before and after your flight to prevent dryness.

4. Electrolytes and Water Bottle - Bring an empty refillable bottle and fill it with filtered water at the airport. Staying hydrated is key, and electrolytes can help maintain your body's balance. I recommend BLDR HYDRO, which includes BCAAs, magnesium, potassium, and taurine, but options like Liquid IV are also available at airports.

5. Lotion - Apply lotion to exposed skin during long flights to counteract the drying effects of the cabin air.

6. Face Mask - Wearing a face mask can help reduce your exposure to airborne viruses and bacteria, especially in crowded or poorly ventilated areas. Face masks were not as common before 2020 for obvious reasons, but globally people didn’t just start wearing them on flights at that point. Throw one on and keep yourself on 100.

7. Vitamin C and Immune Boosters - Consider taking vitamin C supplements or other immune-boosting products before and during your flight to strengthen your immune system.

These travel protocols can help ensure you're ready to perform at your best when you reach your destination. If you have additional tips or already practice these, feel free to share your experiences in the comments for the benefit of the community.
